Events and Getting Involved
City Nature Challenge
Thank you to everyone who took part in the 2024 City Nature Challenge.
Event cancelled: due to a severe ice storm that hit the region on March 29, 2025 the event organizers have decided to cancel the spring 2025 event due to safety concerns.
The City Nature Challenge is a global competition to record nature sightings in communities from around the world. The City partners with the Peterborough Field Naturalists who help participants record wildlife observations using the iNaturalist app. All of the observations are confirmed and tallied as part of Peterborough's official submission to the City Nature Challenge.
Using the iNaturalist App
- Install the iNaturalist app (available for both Apple and Android) and create an account.
- Take photos with detailed observations added to the project page via the app or posted later to your home computer.
- Learn more about how to make impactful observations by reading the iNaturalist resources and by watching the Peterborough Public Library's iNaturalist how-to video.
- Add your observations to the Peterborough project
EnviroX
Peterborough Environmental and Climate Action Expo
The City of Peterborough celebrated the work the municipality and community partners are doing toward environmental and climate action at the first Environmental and Climate Action Expo (EnviroX) on September 23, 2022. EnviroX was an opportunity for residents to learn about initiatives and projects that are achieving greenhouse gas emission reductions and greater environmental sustainability since the declaration of the Climate Change Emergency in 2019. Under the Climate Emergency Declaration, the City committed to protecting the community, its economy, and ecosystems from the damaging impacts of climate change.
Peterborough's first official bird (the Great Blue Heron) was announced at EnviroX, in partnership with Bird Friendly Peterborough.
