Sidewalks

Sidewalk policy

Our Sidewalk policy requires that we provide sidewalks on both sides of new and reconstructed streets.

Where sidewalks are missing along existing streets, new sidewalks are provided according to need as identified in the Sidewalk Strategic Plan. Each year, we build about 2 km of new sidewalks along existing streets. We upgrade and add pedestrian crossings as well to make it easier for you to cross busy streets.

Sidewalk maintenance

City crews inspect all sidewalks annually in accordance with the Provincial Maintenance Standards to identify damage that results in a step of more than 2 cm. The City works to identify damage, to increase users of sidewalks safety, by marking hazards with bright paint. Once hazards are identified city crews build a list and work to correct as many hazards as possible, within our budget. Common causes of damage to sidewalks are:

  • Vehicles driving on/across sidewalks
  • Tree roots
  • Deterioration due to age

Sidewalk reconstruction

Every year the City identifies selected sections of sidewalk for reconstruction throughout the various wards. Areas for reconstruction are based on inspections done by City crews, age, and available budget. The sidewalk reconstruction process begins in May, as weather permits.

Steps for sidewalk reconstruction:
