Get Involved
Get involved at the Peterborough Museum and Archives by making a donation, or learn about our volunteering opportunities.
Donations
Donations are always welcome, although may not always be accepted. In order to accept a donation to our permanent collection or archives, we must be able to store and exhibit the item according to institutional policies. We will appraise donated material using our Acquisitions Policy and Mandate criteria.
We will issue a tax receipt for any monetary donations totaling more than $25.
Thank you for choosing to support the Peterborough Museum and Archives!
Financial donations
Monetary donations to the museum are welcome. You can submit a donation in person, over the phone or by mail. We will issue a tax receipt for any donation over $25 upon request.
Donations to the museum collection or archives
An appointment is required when bringing items in for donation. We ask that you do not leave items intended for donation at the front desk, or unattended at the museum outside our regular hours of operation.
In order to accept a donation, we must be able to store and exhibit the item according to institutional policies. We evaluate potential donations according to the Peterborough Museum and Archives Collections Policy, which states, "...the Museum will accept donations and archival material on the basis of historical significance, research, education and exhibition value, condition and duplication with the collection". Donated material is appraised using our Acquisitions Policy and Mandate criteria. If accepted, the donor signs a Deed of Gift, transferring ownership to the Peterborough Museum and Archives.
Once we accept a donation, ownership of the artifact or archival material transfers to the Peterborough Museum and Archives. We care for the artifacts in the collection in perpetuity, ensuring that we preserve the history of the community for generations.
Peterborough Museum and Archives is designated as a Category A Collecting Institution under the terms of the Canadian Cultural Property Export/Import Act.
Volunteer
The City of Peterborough is a thriving community that benefits from energy and talents of the people who live here. Volunteers enhance our many City facilities and services. There are several opportunities to volunteer with us.
Students can contact us to set up a co-op, placement, or internship.
Youth may be interested in joining our Youth Leadership program. In this program, we give participants the training that prepares them for two weeks of placement in our summer discovery camp programs.
We also have the Museum and Archives Advisory Committee that advises Council and the Arts and Culture Division.
